Abstract
Objective: Safety issues of contraceptives have been raised consistently. However, only few studies analyzed utilization patterns and safety of contraceptive pills among Korean women.

Methods: We conducted telephone interviews in 1,500 Korean women aged 20-49 and have ever used oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) or emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs). The participants were selected with a proportional allocation stratified sampling procedure according to age and geographic region. The questionnaire was composed of three parts; sociodemographic characteristics, drug usage patterns and experience of adverse events (AEs). We classified study subjects into three groups as OCPs only users, ECPs only users and both users to analyze data.

Results: Of 1,500, 1,139 respondents (75.9%) were only OCPs user, 88 respondents (5.9%) were ECPs only users and 273(18.2%) were both users. Overall, 416 respondents (27.7%) have had adverse events whichoccurred after taking OCPs or ECPs. 293(25.7%) of only OCPs user, 13(14.8%) of only ECPs user and 110(40.3%) of both user, have experienced adverse events more than once. The most commonly reported adverse event was nausea and only one respondent reported serious event requiring hospitalization due to vaginal bleeding.

Conclusion: Appropriate strategic plan for safe use of these medications among Korean women should be established based on the results of utilization patterns and adverse events of OCPs and ECPs.
